Using synchrotron radiation we have measured the soft x-ray absorption
and valence-band photoemission spectra from nearly stoichiometric SrC
o1-xFeXO3-delta ceramics of cubic perovskite structure. The total elec
tron yield exhibits features characteristic to the Co and Fe 3p --> 3d
excitation thresholds. From the resonantly enhanced valence-band spec
tra we were able to predict the position and width of the partial Co a
nd Fe 3d density of states. Constant initial state spectra measured th
rough the threshold region indicate that the valence band emission ori
ginates primarily from 3d(n-1) final states rather than from a strong
charge transfer between 3d cation and O 2p ligand states.
