The application of a new apparatus for the mechanical analysis of resi
dual stress is described; this enables the determination of the distri
bution of residual stresses of the first kind over the cross-section o
f bar-shaped specimens. Results of residual stress analysis on heat-tr
eated specimens of heat treatable steel 42CrMo4 (1.7225) are presented
and compared with those from the X-ray diffraction method and the inc
remental hole drilling method. The residual stresses measured by the X
-ray diffraction method at the surface agree well with the results of
the layer removal method, whereas in this case incremental hole drilli
ng led to erroneous results.
