The mechanism proposed in the literature to account for the photolabil
ization of MoV2O2(mu-O)2(H2O)mL6-mn+ for L = H2O, Cl-, and NCS- in aqu
eous acid solutions is supported by extended Huckel calculations. For
the single-bridged dimeric molybdenum (V) complexes containing the Mo2
O34+ core proposed as photolysis intermediates, the experimental compl
exing constants of reaction (1) L- + Mo2O2(mu-O)(H2O)84+ reversible Mo
2O2(mu-O)(H2O)7L3+ + H2O (1) were found to correlate the corresponding
calculated changes in electronic energy.
