The compounds {Pb5Cl6[(CH3)2NCH2CH2O]4} and {Pb3[(CH3)2NCH2CH2 O]3I}I2
, where (CH3)2NCH2CH2O is deprotonated 2-dimethylaminoethanol, have be
en synthesized using the direct method of interaction and characterize
d by X-ray crystallography. The 2-dimethylaminoethoxo groups have the
gauche conformation and are coordinated via oxygen and nitrogen atoms.
The chloride complex contains five- and eight-coordinate lead(II) ato
ms linked by mu3-bridging oxygen and mu2-bridging chlorine atoms, whil
st in the iodide complex three- and four-coordinate metal atoms are li
nked by mu3- and mu2-bridging oxygen atoms. The structural differences
between the coordination environments of the lead atoms are discussed
in connection with the emergence of the ''inert pair'' effect. The co
mpound {Pb5Cl6[(CH3)2NCH2CH2O]4} possesses molecular structure whilst
{Pb3[(CH3)2NCH2CH2O]3I}I2 has an ionic-type crystal lattice.
