A ''live'' plastic scintillator converter has been added to our compac
t, neutron detector system. The latter employs a large-area, proton te
lescope, consisting of multiwire chambers, DELTAE and E detectors to m
easure the energy and angle of recoil protons. The ''live'' converter
provides an increase in count rate by a factor of 6 as well as some im
provement in neutron energy resolution. Neutron scattering data for a
65 MeV neutron beam at CNL and for neutron energies from 60 to 240 MeV
at LAMPF have been taken with this type of system.
