The separation of yin and yang occurs in a way that is predictable and
treatable using Chinese medicine. This condition is evident on the pu
lses as the ''husband/wife'' (HW) imbalance as it occurs in the Five-e
lement tradition. The energetics of the separation of yin and yang are
examined from the standpoint of (1) Chinese creation mythology, (2) t
he Yi Jing (I Ching), (3) the spiritual alchemy of ming-men and (4) Ch
inese physiology. The implications of the HW imbalance and the importa
nce of timely intervention are discussed as they affect diagnosis, pro
gnosis, and treatment. The author concludes that Chinese medicine is c
oncerned with the spiritual evolution of the patient rather than solel
y with his survival-the domain of ''modern' medicine.
