The constitutive model of interface behavior in quasi-brittle material
s developed by the writers is incorporated with the finite-element met
hod. The procedure and problems about the formulation of interface ele
ment are analyzed in detail. The three-term recursive equation is modi
fied to ensure the convergency of the dynamic relaxation process in th
e softening stage of the present study. A simple way of realizing the
prescribed displacement constraint conditions is suggested for the dyn
amic relaxation iterative process. A finite-element code, SANIM (Struc
tural Analysis with a New Interface Model), which can be used in quasi
-brittle material structure analysis for different purposes, is develo
ped. Numerical results were compared favorably with the experimental r
esults of a rock salt specimen under direct tension.
