Mossbauer spectroscopy with Eu-151 nuclei was applied to study magneti
c properties of Fe/Eu multilayers as a function of the Eu layer thickn
ess. The Mossbauer spectra at 4.2 K for [Fe(40 angstrom)/Eu(x angstrom
)] with x=70, 100, and 200 consist of two magnetic components: a major
component with hyperfine parameters close to those of bulk Eu metal a
nd an additional component with a smaller hyperfine field. The latter
component is attributed to Eu at the interface region. The spectrum at
4.2 K for [Fe(40 angstrom)/Eu(30 angstrom)] has only a component with
a reduced hyperfine field, indicating that the Eu layers lose the bul
k magnetic properties.
