The molecular structure of the title compound shows the cyclopentadien
yl ring to be near planar, eta1-bonded, and trans to the tertiary phos
phine. Compounds of this geometry react with Ag+ to produce [Pt(eta5-C
5H5)(CO)(PR3)]+; these in turn regenerate the same isomers of the eta1
-C5H5 complexes on subsequent halide treatment. Reasons for the failur
e to observe other geometries for compounds [PtCl(eta1-C5H5)(CO)(PR3)]
are discussed.
