Abstract
Chlororganic plant-protective agents like HCB, heptachlor, alpha-HCH, lindan, DDT and DDE, dieldrin and aldrin could be detected only in ext remely small amounts in the samples of kidney fat of pigs and cattles in Styria. The residues found within the Styrian residue monitoring pr ogramme were much lower than the maximum amounts allowed in Austria. A s the use of most of the above mentioned organochloric pesticides is n ot permitted in Austria, a further decrease of these residues in foods tuffs is to be expected. Only through the import of foodstuffs and fod der the illicit persistent organochloric compounds can pass to our foo d chain. In contrast to Austrian milk monitoring programme, the existe nce of polychloride biphenyle in meat has not been examined in Austria so far.
