The hospital of St-Etienne, like a lot of hospital centers, describes
the apparition of penicillin G resistant strains of S. pneumoniae. Unt
il may 1992, Saint-Etienne area was not touched, as there was less tha
n one per cent of anormal sensibility to the beta lactam agents. But i
n six months time, 2 S. pneumoniae resistant strains have been isolate
d ; the last one, a serotype 9, has been responsable of a severe pneum
onia which was treated by vancomycin.
