Nanocrystalline LiFe5O8 particles of several nanometers in size have b
een prepared by the PEG gel method, their particle structure, morpholo
gy and magnetic properties were examined by XRD, TEM and VSM. It was f
ound that sigma(s)/sigma(bulk) decreases with decreasing particle size
, where sigma(s), is the saturation magnetization. The surface effect
is probably the dominant effect in the decrease of sigma(s). The Curie
temperature of LiFe5O8 (9.1 nm in diameter) decreased to 580-degrees-
C which is lower than that of bulk LiFe5O8 (620-degrees-C).
