A single oral intake of a diflucan capsule containing 150 mg of the dr
ug was used to treat candidal vulvovaginitis in 53 patients. The diagn
osis was mycologically confirmed in all the cases. Total immediate eff
icacy (1-2 weeks after drug intake) was 84.9 %, that after intake of t
he second capsule (in cases when the first one was ineffective) 92.45
%. The efficacy of therapy for vulvovaginitis caused by C. albicans de
pended on the degree of initial colonization of the vagina with the fu
ngi: primary therapy was ineffective in all the cases with high coloni
zation degree (10(5-7) CFU/tampone), and only after second dose the ag
ent was eliminated in all the patients. Therapy of vulvovaginitis caus
ed by C. stellatoidea or T. glabrata was ineffective even when the vag
ina was moderately colonized (10(3-4) CFU/tampone).
