Surface analyses by XPS depth profiling have been carried out for glas
sy ribbons of La-Ni-Al alloys to reveal correlations between the surfa
ce compositions and hydrogen absorption-desorption properties. It has
been confirmed that the presence of Ni constituent at the surface regi
on of a ribbon is indispensable for promoting its reactivity with hydr
ogen.
