An experimental refrigeration system using hydrogen-absorbing alloys w
as developed. This system is able to attain temperature below -20-degr
ees-C using a 130 to 150-degrees-C heat source. The high performance o
f this refrigeration system were achieved by 1) the development of new
hydrogen-absorbing alloys with appropriate performance around -20-deg
rees-C, 2) the development of a new heat exchanger that quickly conduc
ts alloy reaction heat, and 3) adaptation of vacuum insulation technol
ogy for a hydrogen-absorbing alloy vessel.
