The surface properties of oxidation treated ZrNi1.43, ZrV0.79Ni1.61, a
nd ZrTi0.43Ni1.43 alloys were investigated by X-ray photoemission spec
troscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). The oxidati
on treatment was found to result in segregation on the surface, where
zirconium and titanium are enriched and oxidized on the surface. Metal
lic nickel and vanadium precipitates in the sub-surface and are protec
ted from oxygen by the zirconium or titanium oxide layer. The relation
ship between the surface structure produced and the high reactivity is
discussed.
