Birefringence in longitudinal hydrodynamic field was used to determine
the degree of uncoiling of fibroin molecules assuming antiparallel be
ta-sheet structure in the fibers. A comparative study of fibroin solut
ions in longitudinal flow demonstrated that uncoiling of the macromole
cules is largely controlled by their initial conformational state, whi
ch is a function of the quality of the solvents used.
