Abstract
The significance of aryl-ether hydrolysis in the acidic delignificatio n of aspen in both water and methanolic systems was evaluated. The hyd rolysis of beta-aryl ether units. In addition to the non-cyclic alpha- aryl ethers. was shown to have a direct impact on the initial rapid de lignification up to about 30 and 60% level for the water and methanoli c systems. respectively. Further delignification was also affected by other chemical reactions. e.g. lignin condensation.
