Van der Waals complexes of the bichromophore spirobifluorene with argo
n, nitrogen, water, methanol, and acetonitrile were studied in a super
sonic jet. The 1:1 complexes have two origin transitions which are shi
fted to the red and to the blue of the bare bichromophore origin. Thes
e spectral shifts are discussed in terms of the dispersive interaction
s in a three-body cluster. Larger argon clusters are identified by bro
ad features which are caused by the spectral overlap of many origin tr
ansition. A model of vibronic coupling is suggested to explain the bro
adened features in some of the spectra.
