Studies on the relationship between unemployment and mental health are
classified according to the individual or aggregate data on which the
y are based, as micro- or as macrostudies. This article discusses the
advantages and disadvantages of both research approaches. There is cur
rently a deficit of prospective, controlled studies suitable for testi
ng causal models according to different moderator variables (sex, age,
socioeconomic status, social support, motivation to work, length of u
nemployment).
