Abstract
A thermal model for a generating gear grinding operation is described. Detailed analysis of the teeth profile created and the material shape being removed in each generating stroke of the grinding wheel resulte d in an evaluation of the power density distribution at the wheel-work piece interface. The model enables the calculation of the temperature distribution in the gear tooth during any generating stroke of the gri nding wheel. Also, a depth of hardness change in the workpiece can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. Some experimental results confirm the model.
