This article is based on a presentation held at a general meeting of t
he Economic Society in Finland. The author, who is editor-in-chief of
a newspaper, discusses the problems the newspaper business faces today
, with declining subscriptions, declining public subsidies and plungin
g advertising revenue. The financial problems especially hinder a rene
wal of the newspaper business and thus aggravates the newspapers' weak
ening ability to compete with other media. He also deals with the spec
ial problems facing a small minority-orientated newspaper, when compet
ition grows keener.
