The new compound Cr(II)Nb(IV)F6 and solid solutions CrNb1-xZrxF6 (almo
st-equal-to 0.05 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.34 an
d 0.75 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1) have been synt
hesized. Structural determinations, by Rietveld fullprofile technique
have been carried out on powdered samples. The tetragonal ''HT'' form
of CrNbF6 displays a ferrodistorsive order of elongated CrF6 and compr
essed NbF6 octahedra induced by a strong cooperative Jahn-Teller effec
t. Diffuse reflectance spectra of CrNbF6 and of mixed crystals are dis
cussed with reference to ligand field theory.
