The modern world has to solve a lot of problems of a structural and fu
nctional nature. If life is supposed to have a quality, there is a nee
d for a new philosophy of change and progress. The biocybernetic appro
ach seems to be a useful tool (compass) for managing complex evolution
ary problems. It seems appropriate to reconcile the needs of naturel e
cology and man's survival with a 'true' change/progress, i.e. an equil
ibrated progress (''Gleichgewichtsschritt'' instead of ''Fortschritt''
). F. Vester's principles which are deduced from evolution seem to be
worth thinking about and applying to the type of complex task of the q
uality of life in the modern circumstances of too much onesidedness, i
ndustrialization and urbanization.
