Nine species of nematode-trapping fungi were isolated from soil sample
s from different sites in Ecuador. They all belong to the Hyphomycetes
and capture nematodes by means of sticky hyphal outgrows or constrict
ing rings. The highest site with a predacious fungus (Monacrosporium p
arvicolle) was at 4,200 m altitude. The possible preference of species
for a hot and humid climate, as well as the taxonomy of certain speci
es of Monacrosporium are discussed.
