The smut of A. subterranea is also described and identifie d as belonging to T. restionum. The smut of A. nitens and A. subterran ea is identified as belonging to the genus Tolyposporium on the basis of spore ball characteristics, including unity, number of teliospores per spore ball and germination behaviour. A more detailed description than Nees provided is given for the fungus, including disease symptoms , teliospore morphology and germination behaviour.
