The compact, linear focused ten-stage photomultipliers Hamamatsu R 145
0 and R 1355 have been studied with light pulses generating small numb
ers (N(e)BAR less-than-or-equal-to 25) of photoelectrons. Good amplitu
de resolution for single photoelectrons as well as for small signals i
n general was obtained by considerably increasing the supply voltage U
1 of the first dynode. The time resolution is dominated by the statist
ical variation of N(e). The importance of background from microdischar
ges and Cherenkov radiation is discussed.
