The light response of BaF2 crystals to light and heavy ions (1 less-th
an-or-equal-to Z less-than-or-equal-to 15) has been investigated as a
function of energy, charge and mass of the incident particles up to ap
proximately 40 A MeV. While it is possible to describe the light outpu
t using a unique function of E, Z and A for all the ions, the Birks' c
onstant seems to depend on the charge of the incident ion. Only a smal
l dependence on the mass of the detected ion is found.
