Abstract
Colliding steel rods, unlike colliding steel balls, can lose kinetic e nergy during collisions. The kinetic energy lost appears as stress (vi brational) energy in the rods: We describe apparatus suitable for lect ure demonstrations and laboratory investigations of such collisions. W e explain how colliding rods interact. The reasons why steel balls col lide elastically remain mysterious.
