Values of reciprocal solubility of aliphatic hydrocarbons, some polar
organic solvents, and their binary aqueous mixtures were determined at
20+/-1-degrees-C. The solubility of hydrocarbons in polar organic sol
vents and their aqueous mixtures was established to be a single-valued
function of methylene group increment (I(CH2)) and hydrocarbon molecu
lar mass. The solubility of polar solvents in hydrocarbons depends on
the hydrophilicity of the functional groups of the organic solvents, t
heir hydrocarbon radical length, and on the hydrocarbon molecular mass
. It was shown that growth of hydrocarbon molecular mass in some cases
results in an abrupt drop in the reciprocal solubility of the hydroca
rbon and polar organic or aqueous-organic components of the extraction
system.
