Two new non-chelating bidentate ligands 1,3-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl-meth
ylene)benzene, hereafter 1,3-BIX, and 1,4-bis[benzimidazol-1-yl-methyl
ene]benzene, hereafter 1,4-BIX, have been synthesized and their comple
xes with M(II) salts (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pd and Pt) have been prepare
d and characterized using elemental analysis, magnetic moment measurem
ent, IR, UV-vis and C-13 NMR and FAB-MS (in some cases) studies. Cu-II
, Pd-II and Pt-II metal ions yield dinuclear square-planar complexes v
iz. [enM(BIX)](2)X(4) (en = 1,2 diaminoethane; M = Pd or Pt, X = NO3;
M = Cu, X = ClO4, BIX = 1,3- or 1,4-BIX). Co-II chloride forms dimeric
tetrahedral [Co(BIX)Cl-2](2), whereas Ni-II and Zn-II chlorides yield
polymeric [M(BIX)Cl-2](n) complexes. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Scie
