The reaction of sodium N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate with tin(
II) chloride under aerobic conditions yields the unexpected cis-dichlo
robis(N,N-diethyldithiocarbamato)tin(IV) which has been characterized
by X-ray crystallography. This illustrates the tin to be in a distorte
d octahedral configuration; the coordination valencies being provided
by the two chlorines in cis positions and two dithiocarbamates in cis-
orientations. The Sn-119 NMR of the complex is consistent with the pre
sence of six coordinated tin(IV). The formation of the complex is expl
ained via the intermediate product, tetraethylthiuram disulphide.
