Abstract
Variolin B (1), a new type of pyridopyrrolopyrimidine alkaloid with an titumour and antiviral properties, has been isolated from the Antarcti c sponge Kirkpatrickia varialosa, and its structure determined by X-ra y crystallography. A degradation product, variolin D (2), has been ide ntified from its spectroscopic data.
