Objective: To evaluate the incidence of twin pregnancy among renal-tra
nsplanted women. Methods: A retrospective review based on three nation
al inquiries. A computer literature search of the Medline system was d
one. Only reports of series were included. For statistical analysis th
e probability of having a twin pregnancy was assumed to be 0.012. Main
Outcome Measures: Incidence of twin pregnancy in women after renal tr
ansplantation. Results: There were 7 sets of twins among 153 pregnanci
es reported in the national inquiry group (4.57%). Thus, the overall i
ncidence of twin pregnancy in these women was 1 in 22 pregnancies. The
frequency of twinning in series reporting pregnancies after renal tra
nsplantation was 1.84%, a figure statistically greater than the expect
ed number of twins (P = 0.001). Conclusions: The frequency of twin pre
gnancy appears to be increased among renal-transplanted women.
