D. Iracane et al., EXPERIMENTAL-EVIDENCE FOR HIGH-EFFICIENCY, LOW-BRIGHTNESS BEHAVIOR INFREE-ELECTRON LASERS, Physical review letters, 72(25), 1994, pp. 3985-3988
Spectral broadening is expected in free-electron lasers (FEL) due to s
ideband generation and non-linear mode coupling. For high enough elect
ron current, the FEL beam presents an asymptotic regime characterized
by a broad and turbulent spectrum. Theoretical investigations have sho
wn that this regime also exhibits a strong efficiency enhancement and
a universal low brightness. This paper reports experimental evidence f
or these new scaling laws using the rf linac-based ELSA FEL.
