Abstract
Chief nurse executives from acute care general hospitals selected the ''most professional/innovative'' nursing unit in their institutions an d indicated which level in the nursing hierarchy was responsible for s elected activities and decisions about the content and context of prac tice on that unit. Responses from 220 executives raise interesting iss ues regarding the sharing of governance between administrators and sta ff registered nurses.
