V. Wiskamp et Js. Schneider, ADVANCED LEVEL COURSES IN INORGANIC AND P OLYMER CHEMISTRY AS PART OFAN ECOLOGICALLY ORIENTED ENGINEERING CURRICULUM, Chimia, 48(5), 1994, pp. 142-146
Based on the Zurich Model with the purpose of providing a contemporary
curriculum for young chemical engineers, we reorganized the introduct
ory chemistry courses as well as the advanced level courses in Inorgan
ic and Polymer Chemistry at the Fachhochschule Darmstadt. Samples of i
norganic compounds prepared by students are recycled to reusable start
ing materials (including quality control), waste water is treated, and
organic solvents are recycled in high yields. In particular, the proj
ects on waste water treatment and polymer recycling include state-of-t
he-art industrial methods such as the use of H2O2 and the application
of UV irradiation. Special attention was also paid to the teaching of
safe and responsible handling of especially hazardous and toxic substa
nces such as Hg, CdS, cyanides, and others.
