Abstract
The principles which underlie weighing by comparison of the object's w eight against standard weights or against forces of different origins are briefly reviewed. The paper then discusses some self-compensating balances and the realization of free-floating magnetic suspensions for direct weighing or for coupling of an object to separate balance.
