The kinetics of oxidation of metol (N-methyl-p-aminophenol) by thalliu
m(III) have been studied in a perchloric acid medium. This organic com
pound is employed extensively in photographic work. The stoichiometry
of the reaction is represented by: C6H4(OH)NHCH3 + Tl(III) --> C6H4(O)
NCH3 + Tl(I) + 2H+ The kinetics indicate the rate low: k' = Kk[metal]/
1+ K[metal] where k' is the pseudo-first-order rate constant. The rate
constants and thermodynamic parameters for the rate-limiting step hav
e been evaluated.
