The method of quick immersion of the sample into a hot zone was chosen
for the study of outgassing of metal samples; an additional temperatu
re rise of the sample was achieved by electron bombardment. As the tem
perature measurement was by an optical pyrometer, large errors occurre
d, which were caused by high reflectivity of the samples and use of a
thermocouple was difficult when using electron bombardment. For this r
eason the temperature of the sample was determined by an additional me
asurement from the thermal expansion of the sample. The sample was mou
nted as a part of a pendulum suspension and the temperature was determ
ined from the changes of the oscillation periods. The experimental arr
angement, theory and examples of results obtained by this method are d
escribed in the following paper.
