Abstract
Through comparison of the Raman spectra of a series of homologous comp ounds of the type M(2)X(6) (M = Mo, W; X = OR, R) containing a metal-m etal triple bond, we have assigned bands at approximately 365 cm(-1) f or the dimolybdenum species and approximately 285 cm(-1) for the ditun gsten species to the metal-metal stretching frequency nu(M=M). This is the first definitive assignment of nu(M=M) in triply bonded M(2)X(6) compounds.
