Parametric characterization of aperture-diffracted laser beams is inve
stigated experimentally. The width of a diffracted beam is measured as
the mean square deviation of the intensity profile integrated over fi
nite area. A practical criterion for the choice of this area is given.
With this criterion, the change of the width as the diffracted beam p
ropagates is found hyperbolic, and the product waist width times diver
gence angle invariant under ABCD transformations.
