A technique based on an iterative numerical method is described for lo
cating the bifurcation point which separates the dispersion curve for
TE modes of a nonlinear planar waveguide into stable and unstable regi
ons. Numerical examples are presented for waveguides with both step an
d graded refractive index profiles illustrating how iterative methods
can be used to locate regions of stability.
