The potential use of a silver substrate for surface-enhanced Raman ana
lysis was investigated. The substrate was prepared by nitric acid etch
ing of silver foils and checked for nitrogen-containing aromatic compo
unds. The response stability of this substrate and its reversibility a
fter several uses are studied. Analytical figures of merit, such as pr
ecision, linear dynamic range, and limits of detection for a variety o
f compounds are presented to demonstrate the analytical capability of
this substrate.
