An image pyramid with multi-resolution is needed for coarse-to-fine im
age matching. A modern GIS should have a multiscaling function and an
image analysis system should effectively analyse the multiresolution i
nformation content of images. Therefore, the development of a new theo
ry which concentrates on the processing of multiresolution signals is
necessary. The wavelet theory is nowadays such a theory with great pot
ential; its basic concepts and properties will be introduced below. In
this paper, the methods are described using the Gaussian function as
the smoothing function to generate wavelets for image edge detection f
rom digitized images of aerial photographs. As compared with famous op
erators such as the zero-crossings and Sobel operators, the new approa
ch displays many advantages. This theory is also valuable for pattern
recognition, computer vision, image analysis, the solution of partial
differential equations and the analysis of fractals.
