The selective adsorption resins for Ge(IV) with the 1,2-diol type liga
nds were prepared by the amination of a chloromethylated styrene-divin
ylbenzene beads with 3-dimethylamino-1,2-propanediol (3DMA-PD), 3-diet
hylamino-1,2-propanediol (3DEA-PD) and 3-amino-1,2-propanediol (3A-PD)
. Ge(IV) was adsorbed on these resins from the neutral or alkaline sol
utions. The 3DMA-PD and 3DEA-PD resins exhibited the adsorption capaci
ties for Ge(IV) at 1.14 and 0.98 mmol.g-1, respectively, whereas the 3
A-PD resin showed the lower capacity at 0.65 mmol - g-1. The breakthro
ugh capacities of the columns packed with 2 cm3 of these resins were e
valuated by loading the various buffered solutions of Ge(IV). The Ge(I
V) adsorbed in the column was eluted completely with dilute hydrochlor
ic acid.
