In Rutherford backscattering spectra of steel and cast iron, the shape
of iron and carbide edges depend upon the roughness profiles of the m
achined surface, the machining regime (which gives the specific roughn
ess patterns), and the brand of alloy. For the carbide, it is evident
that there is a high concentration of carbon within the thin coating l
ayer of thickness equivalent to that of the average roughness value, R
(a). To clarify the abnormal behaviour observed, a new experimental ma
chining procedure has been developed.
