Abstract
A thermodynamically stable face-centred icosahedral phase with a penta gonal dodecahedral solidification morphology has been found in Zn-Mg-R E (RE = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho or Er) alloys. We report here the structure, sta bility and morphology in this new group of icosahedral alloys on the b asis of results for the Zn-Mg-Y system.
