Abstract
The authors report 1.56mum MQW BH lasers that use a tapered active reg ion and underlying passive guide to increase the laser spot size. Coup ling losses to 10mum core cleaved singlemode fibre as low as 4.7dB hav e been obtained for devices with threshold currents of approximately 1 2mA at 20-degrees-C.
