Abstract
Nonspherical collapse to a black hole leaves a wake of gravitational w
aves. Externally, this rapidly dies away. But it has a marked effect o
n the hole's internal structure as it is blueshifted near the inner ho
rizon. This article surveys recent attempts to understand the nature o
f these effects using idealized models.
